Gallery co-owner Joyce Thor will present a sample of her works from the past nineteen years in watercolor, oil and acrylic. There will be a collection of her family portraits that was motivated by the imminent death of her younger brother. There will also be still lifes, landscapes, waterscapes, and abstracts. The Opening Reception at JarrettThor Fine Arts will be Friday October 13 as part of the Second Friday Art Walk in Colonial Beach. The exhibit will hang until November 5. The public is cordially invited free of charge.
Joyce grew up in Nelson County, Virginia and had a 30-year career with NASA, where she became Director of Quality and Productivity Improvement. Here she led teams of almost exclusively male engineers and technical specialists in evaluating defense contractors who were key NASA suppliers. After “retiring” from NASA, she and her husband Carl established a Management Consulting firm for which they travelled the world teaching quality improvement. Images from these travels influenced her later painting.
Joyce began painting in 1998 with classes at the Smithsonian, the Art League in Alexandria, and at various workshops around the world. In 2007, the Thors established JarrettThor Fine Arts in Colonial Beach, which now displays the work of about forty artists, mostly from the Mid-Atlantic Region. Though Joyce continued painting during the evolution of the Gallery, this is her first solo exhibit. Although now legally blind, she still occasionally paints large abstracts.
Also on display will be works of some of the gallery’s permanent artists along with unique jewelry, decorative minerals and wooden bowls. On site at JarrettThor is the Tarver Harris Design Studio featuring her unique abstracts. Hours are Thursday-Sunday 10AM-5PM or by appointment.
