June 9-11 will be a busy weekend at JarrettThor Fine Arts in Colonial Beach. On Friday night, the Colonial Beach Second Friday Art Walk will present a full slate of art. On Saturday, part of the JarrettThor crew will move to Ingleside Wineries for “Arts on the Vine”, the intersection of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail, the Virginia Oyster Trail and the Northern Neck Artisan Trail. On Sunday, JarrettThor will be open for a special Open Door Tour of the Artisan Trail.
The June Second Friday exhibit at JarrettThor will be “The World in Warp”, a collection of the works of gallery co-owner Carl Thor. All the works tell a “story”, which usually features a distorted view of the world by someone…artist, subject or observer. Many remote parts of the civilized and natural world are represented….China, Microbiology, US Politics, Negative Space, Agricultural Drainage, Turtles and, of course, Colonial Beach, for examples. Styles represented are equally random…..primitive, collage, abstract, etc. The Opening Reception will be Friday June 9 from 6-9 PM, and the public is invited free-of-charge. The works will hang until July 9.
Carl took up painting only after he retired from careers in oil, food, international management consulting, and writing books on productivity improvement. He and his wife Joyce opened JarrettThor Fine Arts in 2007, and Carl took several classes at the Art League in Alexandria so as to better understand what artists do. He continues active as a Director of the American Productivity and Quality Center in Houston and Downtown Colonial Beach.
Saturday’s “Arts on the Vine” at Ingleside Wineries from 11 AM-4 PM will feature a special collection of “Oyster Paintings” by JarrettThor artists and a live painting demo by local artist Doris Barbee. There will also be oysters to eat and, of course, wine to drink.
The oyster paintings will return to Colonial Beach for Sunday’s “Open Door Tour” from 11 AM-4 PM, which will also present a live demo of oyster painting from Vicki Marckel, another JarrettThor artist, and refreshments free-of-charge.
On site at JarrettThor all three days will also be the Tarver Harris Design Studio featuring silk scarves and abstract paintings. There will also be works by the gallery’s other permanent artists. And there will be decorative minerals, unique jewelry and wooden bowls. JarrettThor is located at 100 Taylor St. Hours are Thursday-Sunday 10 AM-5 PM and other times by appointment.
